“He’s the best in Europe right now”

Alexander Isak scores goals for Newcastle and strikes terror into whatever defenders he faces.
Teammate Anthony Gordon:
– He’s probably the best in Europe right now, with the form he’s in, Gordon told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Alexander Isak excelled again as he once again demonstrated his ability to be in the right place at the right time – and make the most of the situation.

The lead goal against Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final on Tuesday night breathed coolness, skill and absolute presence in the moment.

Besides, it was on his end Anthony Gordon scored the final score 2–0 at the start of the second half then David Raya released return.

“Very selfless”

– His greatest quality is that he is so humble. He is very unselfish, never hesitates to pass the ball, says Gordon about Isak.

Isak’s goal score is very impressive. That against Arsenal was his tenth in just nine games, all competitions included.

Praise poured in after the semi-final – the first of two – as Isak and Newcastle took a big step towards the final at Wembley in March.
– In the first half he was electric, I think he played great. He scored but overall I thought he had a good game, said the manager Eddie Howe at the press conference after the match.

Also Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta highlighted Isak’s performance.
– He was involved in both goals and it was basically the only times they had the ball in the penalty area. That’s how it is when you have quality at the forefront, it can be the difference.

Alexander Isak himself downplayed his own effort.
– It is a team effort. We came here with the ambition to get a good result and we got that, he said.

Felt off the back of the thigh

Somewhat worrying are the reports that the national team striker suffered a slight injury. That must have been the reason why he stepped off the field already after about an hour of play at the Emirates Stadium.
– He felt something in the back of his thigh so we had to adapt to that in the second half. It meant a clear deterioration in our performance, explained Howe.

The semi-final second leg will be played at St James’ Park in Newcastle on 5 February.
– We don’t have time to celebrate the victory. They are one of Europe’s best teams, it’s only 2-0. We must be humble, said Anthony Gordon to the BBC.

Isak’s national team mates Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall also has the chance to reach the final. Tonight, Tottenham take on Liverpool at home in the first leg of the second semi-final.
