British Communities and Local Government Minister Michael Gove made a statement regarding the Grenfell fire, in which 72 people died in England in 2017. Gove stated that the government was partially responsible for the Grenfell fire due to the deficiencies in the building regulations and the abuse of the regulations by the contractors.
“If you look at what happened to Grenfell, I think there are many factors. But yes, the government collectively needs to take some responsibility,” Gove said. Gove said that there is a difference between actively exploiting it and said, “It is undeniable that the structure regulation system is not correct.”
‘A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY’
Describing the Grenfell fire as a terrible tragedy, Gove pointed out that making the most dangerous buildings, those taller than 18 meters, safe is an important process, emphasizing that many unsafe buildings still need remedial work.
Deadliest residential fire in Britain since WWII
In June 2017, a fire broke out in Grenfell Tower, a 23-floor social housing block located in the west of the capital London, due to an electrical failure in the refrigerator in an apartment, and the flammable coating system installed on the exterior of the building caused the fire to grow rapidly. While 72 people lost their lives in the fire, a public investigation was launched after the fire. Hundreds of buildings were found to have similar cladding, with the investigation finding numerous faults in Grenfell’s renovation and administration. The fire in question was also recorded as the deadliest fire in a residential building in England since the Second World War. (UAV)
