Azize Okurlar, a mother of three children living in Bor district of Niğde, used painkillers for 15 years due to the pain she experienced in her neck, right ear and throat. However, last week, upon the recommendation of a neurologist, Azize Okurlar went to the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) service of a hospital in Niğde. The MRI taken here showed elongation in the bone behind the ear. Thereupon, Azize Okurlar and her husband Ali Okurlar came to a private hospital in Tarsus district of Mersin.
THE STYLOID PROCESS BONE BEHIND THE EAR IS EXTENDED BY 3 CENTIMETERS
ENT Specialist Opr. examined the patient and examined the MRI results. Dr. Hüseyin Keskin determined that the patient’s styloid process bone behind the ear extended 3 centimeters as a result of muscle tendon calcification and sank into the surrounding tissues. Op. Dr. With the surgery performed by Hüseyin Keskin, the excess bone behind Azize Okurlar’s ear was removed.
“SOMETIMES I COMMITTED TO SCREAMING BECAUSE OF THE PAIN”
Azize Okurlar, who was discharged 2 days after the operation, said, “I had severe pain in my neck, right ear and throat for 15 years. Sometimes I felt like screaming because of the pain. There were times when I couldn’t sleep at night. It hurt especially when I turned my head left or right. I thought I had a cervical disc herniation, but even though I used painkillers, I couldn’t help it.” However, a neurologist I went to in Bor said, “There may be something wrong with your ear. You should be examined by an ear-nose-throat specialist.” “You better be,” he said. “After that, it turned out that it was not a hernia, but a bone extension. After the surgery, I was relieved from the severe pain I had been suffering from for 15 years.”
“THERE IS NO SITUATION LEFT THAT CAUSES HIM TO EXPERIENCE PAIN”
Op. Dr. Hüseyin Keskin said that the bone elongation experienced by Azize Okurlar was a rare ‘eagle syndrome’. Keskin said, “In this patient, bone elongation occurred as a result of muscle tendon calcification. The elongated bone caused pain because it sank into the surrounding tissues. We removed the bone with the operation we performed with our operating room team. Now there is no situation that would cause our patient to experience pain.” (DHA)
