The herring fishing quota in the Baltic Sea will also be reduced in the decision.

The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council has agreed on new fishing quotas for the Baltic Sea. With the decision, herring fishing will continue normally with reasonable quotas, says the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in a press release.

In the Gulf of Bothnia, the herring quota will be reduced by 31 percent, and in addition, Finland and Sweden committed to closing trawl fishing in the regional waters of the Selkämere next summer from the end of May to the end of June.

The herring fishing quota in the main Baltic Sea basin and the Gulf of Finland will be reduced by 43 percent and the kilo shark quota by 10 percent. Trawl fishing for herring and skipjack in the main basin of the Baltic Sea and in the Gulf of Finland will be banned in spring 2024.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah (qd.) describes the decision as responsible.

– The now approved solution is in accordance with the best scientific advice and the EU’s common fisheries policy and Finland’s goals. I am particularly pleased that the council decided to continue targeted herring fishing in accordance with scientific advice, Essayah says in the release.
