Lots of rules

The A and O of license plates is that they must be legible. On the police website it states that “registration plates must be clearly visible from all angles and must not be illegible due to damage, dirt, ice, snow or the like.”

It is illegal to drive a vehicle with a hard-to-read license plate. If your registration plates are damaged and illegible, you should order new ones from the Swedish Transport Agency, according to the police.

If you try to inspect the car with a damaged or illegible license plate, you will also be penalized for this.

A provisional license plate

If you lose your registration plate or have it stolen, you must order a new plate as quickly as possible.

If you want to use your car while waiting for these, you must use a provisional license plate.

Provisional registration plates are issued by the Police Authority and look a lot like a yellow piece of cardboard with a black felt-tip pen. To obtain a provisional license plate, a physical visit to a police station that is open must be made.

Driving your vehicle without a license plate is illegal. The only exception is when traveling to the police to order their provisional license plates.

It normally takes up to three working days for The Swedish Transport Agency to issue a new registration plate. A provisional license plate is issued directly on the spot.
