What to wear for a first date? Far from being trivial, this question could even prove crucial for the future of this potential relationship. Singles are particularly demanding when it comes to style, to the point of showing a red card at the sight of certain items of clothing. This is the case for shoes deemed too comfortable and sequinned outfits, the ultimate fashion faux pas on a first date.

The “sex-positive” dating app Pure looked at the influence of fashion, and more specifically clothing style, on the future of a relationship. No less than 2,000 single adults were surveyed on their expectations in this area, showing themselves to be inflexible about what to wear on a first date. And that’s an understatement since the study reveals that more than a third of the single people surveyed (36%) have already canceled a date because they didn’t have anything sexy to wear. A figure which testifies to the importance given to clothing during a first meeting. The expression “the first impression is always the right one” seems to be essential in the eyes of singles, many of whom dress up for this long-awaited moment (86%).

The study tells us that almost half of respondents (47%) consider that style makes all the difference. But let singles rest assured, the outfit does not make the monk in the eyes of all the suitors. An overwhelming majority of respondents (93%) even say they can find a sexy crush regardless of what they wear. Note, however, that women are more demanding on this question, with 63% of them confiding that they give priority to a person who has a good sense of style and an “average appearance”, rather than the opposite.

Singles even consider certain clothes and accessories prohibitive on a first date. According to the survey, women should give up wearing shoes that are too comfortable, such as Uggs, Crocs or Birkenstocks (20%), which have been very popular in recent years, but also transparent clothing (20%), and everything which relates to the Barbiecore trend (17%). As for these gentlemen, if they want to conclude, it is better that they avoid clothes with sequins or sequins (23%), slim jeans (22.5%), and the same comfortable shoes mentioned above (22%).

Missteps do not only concern clothing style, beauty also seems to be scrutinized. With this in mind, women should avoid being too heavy handed when it comes to makeup. Something considered prohibitive for 49% of the panel, ahead of dental ornaments (35%) and too conspicuous contouring (29%). So many parameters to take into account before a first date, unless you consider that it is more important to feel good in your sneakers (or your Crocs) especially if this is really decisive in the eyes of this potential partner.

*For the purposes of this study, Pure researchers surveyed 2,000 adults aged over 18, without focusing on specific genders, geographies, ethnicities, sexualities or social backgrounds.
