Heres how much teachers in France earn in 2023

From kindergarten to high school, here is how much the teachers will receive for this new school year 2023. Fixed salary and bonuses, we have made the additions.

Teaching, often considered more of a vocation than a profession, is of paramount importance in society. So, in 2023, what are the salaries of teachers in France? The figures show that now a school teacher who teaches in kindergarten and primary has the same basic salary grid as a certified teacher who gives lessons in college and high school.

In both cases, a beginning teacher receives a gross monthly salary of €2,171. With his €443 gross of allowances, his net income amounts to €2,102. In the middle of his career, this figure increases. The gross monthly salary reaches €2,555, supplemented by an allowance of €320. In total, the mid-career professor can expect a net income of €2,301. At the end of a career, the financial panorama is even higher. The teacher receives a gross salary of €3,313 per month, to which are added €195 in allowances, which is equivalent to a net income of €2,796.

These teachers are also entitled to specific bonuses. In particular, they can benefit from an entry bonus into teaching professions of €1,500. In addition, an installation bonus is offered to those who choose to work exclusively in the communes of Île-de-France and in the urban area of Lille. The latter varies between €2,121 and €2,185, depending on the amount of the residence allowance.

The difference between school teachers and certified college and high school teachers is more in the bonuses. In kindergarten and primary, they can add nearly 3000 euros per year gross if they exercise the function of school director. If they teach in REP, the priority education network, it is 1734 euros gross annually which are added to their remuneration. In REP+, this premium amounts to 5114 euros gross.

In colleges and high schools, the bonuses are the same for teachers in REP and REP+ but there is a bonus for annual overtime. This is calculated per overtime each week and each hour is paid from €1,196 to €1,594 gross. The first overtime hour is better paid than the following ones.

Finally, it is interesting to make a comparison of teachers’ salaries at European level. According to the OECD, French teachers are paid 50% less than their colleagues in Germany or the Netherlands. They are paid 20% less than the Portuguese, 10% less than the Spaniards. But they outclass the teachers from the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland) and Italy by more than 10%. And are paid almost twice as much as the Greeks, Poles, Czechs and Hungarians. It is in Luxembourg that teachers are the best paid in the world since they receive 2.5 times more than their French counterparts.
