Death and survival in the different I Am Legend endings
In the regular theatrical version of the sci-fi blockbuster, Robert (Smith), Anna (Alice Braga) and Ethan (Charlie Tahan) end up surrounded by a horde of infected. The protagonist sends the two away with the antidote in a blood sample.
He then detonates a hand grenade as the infected storm the lab. Although death isn’t shown directly, Will Smith’s main character in the finale of I Am Legend is very clear self sacrificed.
The alternative ending, which was subsequently released as bonus material on the DVD, for example, completely changes the finale of the sci-fi film. Here Smith’s character realizes the aim of the attackers, who free the infected woman and just keep to yourself as a community want.
When he hands them over the woman held for research, the people are left alone by the infected. So Smith’s protagonist survives the film this time.
