When all eyes were on Donald Trump, several spectators risked their lives to save others.
One of them was father Corey Comperatore, 50, who threw himself in front of his family – and was hit by the gunshots.
“He was the best father,” writes his daughter.
First three shots were heard. Then another five in close succession during Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night US time.
Riots quickly broke out among the supporters. Several threw themselves on the ground, ran away in panic or screamed loudly.
The sequence of events was over in a few seconds – but the shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, managed to hit several people.
Donald Trump was hit in the ear and slightly injured. Among the spectators in the audience, who were standing just behind the stage, two men were seriously injured. A third man died.
He has been identified as Corey Comperatore, 50, writes the Daily Mail. Colleagues of the man say he worked as a manager in the fire department.
“The shooter took my brother’s life,” writes the man’s sister on Facebook.
“I feel hatred for the shooter who took the life of the man we loved the most. He was a hero who protected his daughters,” the sister writes further.
Just turned 50
The sister writes that he had just turned one.
“His wife and girls have just gone through the most unimaginable and unimaginable. My little brother just turned 50 and had so much left in his life,” she writes.
He is now being cared for by a large family.
“Pray for my sister-in-law, my nieces, my mother, sister, me and his niece because this feels like a terrible nightmare, while knowing it is our painful reality,” writes the sister.
“He was the best father”
Corey Comperatore’s daughter also writes about the grief.
“Yesterday time stopped. And when it started going again, my family and I woke up to a nightmare,” she writes.
She says that the whole family, but especially her father, had been looking forward to Trump’s speech at the campaign meeting.
“What should have been something fun turned into the most traumatizing thing I’ve ever been through.”
When the shots came, he is said to have thrown himself in front of his family.
“He quickly threw mother to the ground. He protected me with his body against the bullets”.
She says she is very grateful that he was her father.
“He was the best father you could wish for. He gave me and my sister everything. If you called, he always answered, and he did everything for us,” she writes.
“I can’t put into words how much I love you,” she continues.
The witness tried to save the man’s life
While all eyes were on Trump, and Secret Service agents pounced on the ex-president to protect him, other witnesses rushed to the injured on the stand.
Witness Rico Elmore has previously told the Washington Post that he tried to save the life of one of the gunshot victims – but that it was too late.
– I tried to stabilize his head, but it was a serious injury, he says.
Donald Trump was quickly removed from the scene. Pictures after the crime show how the stand has been stained with blood.
Another picture shows a man lying down in the stands, while another man is sitting up with blood on his shirt.
The motive for the crime is not yet known. Thomas Matthew Crooks was quickly shot dead by the Secret Service.
