Here Tilde de Paula Eby meets Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling

Today the blockbuster movie about Barbie premieres.
Before the premiere, Tilde met the main actors and the director in London.
– I don’t think anyone knows what to expect, says director Greta Gerwig.

There is more or less Barbie hysteria in the world and the wait is now over: Today the blockbuster film about the iconic Barbie doll premieres. In the main roles we see Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Before the premiere, Tilde de Paula Eby went to London to interview the lead actors and director Greta Gerwig.

During the interview, Tilde points out that she had no idea what to expect from the film before she saw it – but that she was surprised.

– I don’t think anyone knows what to expect, because even if you have some kind of expectation, I don’t think the expectations are right, says Greta Gerwig.

The director: “Life is uncomfortable and unpredictable”

One of the big questions raised in the film is what it is like to be human – how difficult, interesting but also wonderful it actually is. Which leads Margot Robbie into what she finds difficult about being human, when she is herself and not Barbie.

– Change has been difficult, especially when I was a child. All changes when I was a child were difficult. There’s a scene in the movie where America Ferrera’s character tells Barbie that life is all about changing and she thinks that sounds horrible, she says.

– It felt very honest to me. I remember very clearly how scary I found change.

Greta Gerwig talks about her thoughts on lifting precisely the complexity of being human.

– The film takes a somewhat abrupt turn. I think, and it’s also said in the movie, that a doll is a coping strategy for life. It is one of the strategies we have, she says.

– I walked over to the British Museum and looked around yesterday when I arrived. All these human-like figures that we have created throughout history… We invest in objects that then depict our lives. One explanation for that is that life is uncomfortable and unpredictable. I think there’s something at the core of it that I thought was… There’s something mythical about it, she continues.
