It has almost been a month since powerful earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, killing over 50,000 people.
Feyza Yilmas is one of the many affected by the earthquake. She lost four family members when a house collapsed.
The accommodation, the luxurious Trend Garden Residence, turned out to be a fraudulent construction – a renovation that took place without permission. This applies to many buildings in Turkey and it has led to several local disputes with protracted bureaucracy.
Therefore, President Erdogan introduced an amnesty a couple of years ago which meant that the buildings were approved retroactively. Now a criminal investigation has been launched after the collapse of the apartment building, but Feyza has no hope that it will change anything.
– I don’t think anything will get better because of something I’m telling you now. Everything is forgotten in a couple of weeks in this country and permission will be given, she says.
