Here the teachers train for a school attack

Security in the Swedish school came into focus after the attack in Trollhättan in 2015. Now more and more municipalities choose to train their school staff in security, in Mölndal it happens when the students are on summer vacation.
– It’s tragic, but a must, unfortunately, says Hanna Bremmers, who is chairman of Sweden’s teachers in the city of Mölndal.

– You don’t imagine that you will have to experience something like this. But it’s still good that we prepare for it, says Liselotte Skoglund, assistant principal at a primary school in the municipality.

Security in the Swedish school came into focus during the attack in Trollhättan in 2015 and, through several successors, has become one of perhaps the most important security issues of our time.

More and more municipalities are now choosing to train their school staff in safety. In Mölndal, it happens when the students are on summer vacation and the local union president is positive.

– It was good, but also heavy. Because it is mentally heavy to even have to think about a school attack, says Hanna Bremmers, chairman of Sweden’s teachers in the city of Mölndal.

“Like fire drills”

Recently, the authority for community protection and preparedness released new guidelines on serious acts of violence in school environments. Assuming that they do not establish anything about the possible participation of children, the government’s special investigator for school safety, Jonas Trolle, thinks that at least staff should frequently practice what is called “Ongoing deadly violence”.

– Without prejudging the investigation, we still see that this is something that should be part of a safety and security work in the school world. About the same way as you have when it comes to fire drills, he says.

Hannas Bremmers does not want to say how often they will practice specifically in Mölndal’s primary schools, but recognizes the need.

– It is tragic, but unfortunately a must, she says.
