Latvia has demolished a Soviet war monument in the capital Riga. The 79-meter-tall monument was buried after parliament voted to remove all Soviet monuments and memorials by mid-November. – I am here to finally see the star of the Soviet Union fall. It is a monumental day, says Rigabon Artos. The monument was erected in 1958 to commemorate the Soviet conquest of Latvia during World War II, which was then occupied by Germany. In recent years, the site has been a gathering point for thousands of ethnic Russians on May 9 to celebrate the Allied victory over Germany in 1945. Many Latvians see the day as the beginning of the Soviet occupation that lasted until Latvia gained independence in 1991. In the player above: See the demolition of the monument.
