In the middle of the men’s 3000 meter qualifier, one of the participants fell and injured his foot. Then Andorra runner Nahuel Carabana stopped to lead his opponent off the track.
At lunchtime on Tuesday, the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase qualifiers were decided. The Danish runner Axel Vang Christensen got off to a good start and took command right away in the competition.
Fell miserably
But after an obstacle, Christensen fell, while he was in the lead, and was lying on the track. Then Andorra runner Nahuel Carabana, who was in last place, thought it was more important to help his opponent off the course than to continue competing for a final place.
In the pictures, you can see how Carabana stops to offer Christensen a helping hand. But the Danish participant does not manage to get up and in the end Carabana helps his opponent off the track by carefully pulling him backwards.
The nice gesture is now widely celebrated all over the world.
“So beautiful”
“He deserves an award,” wrote one user on Twitter.
“Carabana should have a gold in sportiness,” writes another.
“So beautiful. What a kind thing to do,” writes a third.
With the nice gesture, the Andorrans washed away their chances of qualifying for the final. He finished last but ran to a standing ovation from the stands.
