Here, the remains of the Italian spirit grappa become green energy

Grappa is a traditional Italian spirit that is extracted from grape pomace. Now the country’s largest grappa producer, Bonollo, has also started supplying green energy.

SVT’s Italy correspondent Jennifer Wegerup has visited a facility where biomethane gas is extracted from the liquids that remain after grappa production.

Progress

  • This is how Sweden managed to crack African swine fever

  • New method will remove the algae

  • The gas, in turn, can supply up to 3,000 households with, among other things, heat.

    – We focus on making use of everything that is left over after we have distilled the grappa, says Elvio Bonollo, marketing manager at Bonollo Destilleri.

Gas from the liquor could lead to more heat in Italy

Around 65 percent of the world’s wine production comes from Europe.

Italy produces five percent of the biomethane gas in the EU, according to Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco, CEO of Italgas Nät, the largest gas producer in Italy.

    – There is a great opportunity to expand production, he says Reuters.

In 2022, Italy invested 1.7 billion euros in supporting various investments for the extraction of biomethane gas.
