Five teenage girls dancing without a veil in a video drew the ire of the Iranian regime. Now they have been forced to apologize. – When we danced, it was not right, says one of the women in the apology, which is believed to be forced. The footage, of the girls dancing in a Tehran residential area, was posted on social media on International Women’s Day last week. It quickly spread throughout the world. Dancing in public is forbidden in Iran, and the girls do not wear veils. Therefore, the regime’s security forces sought out the dancers using surveillance footage from the area. Received a warning According to Iran International, a television channel based in London, they initially received only a warning. They were then arrested and held captive for two days. A few days ago, a new video was posted on the girls’ dance teacher’s account, the same account that posted the dance video. Dressed as the regime wants, they distance themselves from their dance and say it was wrong, a confession the teenagers have most likely been coerced into. But others continue to dance in protest, often to the same song. For example, a new video has gone viral. There, a woman is seen dancing outside the Evin prison, where many of the political prisoners in Tehran are held. Watch the girls dance – in the player above
