A Swedish cargo ship in the vicinity of Bornholm started burning at 9 pm on Thursday evening and the crew on board was forced to evacuate.

– We found out that there was an explosion and then a fire started, says Fredrik Hermansson at the Maritime and Air Rescue Centre.
A fire broke out on a Swedish cargo ship near the Danish island of Bornholm on Thursday evening. The Swedish Maritime Administration was alerted at 21:22. The cargo ship had five people on board and was not loaded.
The Swedish Maritime and Air Rescue Center participated in the international operation.
We have assisted Denmark when the ship was in the Danish rescue region, so we have assisted with one of the Swedish Maritime Administration’s rescue helicopters, says air rescue leader Fredrik Hermansson.
Rescue operation with helicopter

Fredrik Hermansson has no information on whether there is a risk of further fires.
We do not know what caused the fire. But all the crew members are on board our rescue helicopter on its way to Kristianstad’s helicopter base. No one should be injured, he says.
