Here, students in Luleå break down the popular ice cream trend

The Mpemba effect is the name given to the observation that warmer water freezes into ice faster than cold water. At Luleå University of Technology, Oskar Goman reported together with Victor and John, at which temperatures they notice that warmer water freezes faster than cold.

– It was only when the water was between 60 and 80 degrees that you could notice that there was this cloud that indicates that it is freezing, says Goman, who was the only one in the group present during the presentation.

“Not cold enough”

But it is only these past few weeks with the cold snap that the tests have been able to be done outdoors.

– I think it’s cool that around such an essential substance as water, you don’t know the answer to why warmer water freezes faster than cold.

During the cold of the last few weeks, a lot of clips have been spread of different people throwing boiling water over themselves to create a cloud. Oskar Goman believes that it is mainly because it looks cool.

– If you throw cold water, nothing happens, but that it happens when hot water is thrown, I think is surprising to many. Then it doesn’t hurt that it looks nice either, he says.
