In May, Roslagens Sjövärnskår managed to interrupt two ongoing boat thefts. The first time, the thieves were in full swing to tow away three boats they had just stolen. When the Navy appeared, the thieves fled at full speed on a jet ski.
The second time, the boat thieves were busy stealing a boat engine when they were interrupted by the Navy crew. The thieves drove the boat ashore and disappeared before the police arrived.
– Thanks to the fact that we stopped the thieves during the ongoing crime, many people have escaped having their boats stolen, says Joakim Wohlfeil at Roslagens Sjövärnskår.
Looking for what deviates
The Stockholm region is most exposed to boat thieves in Sweden and throughout Scandinavia, and here the reduction in the number of crimes has taken place much more slowly than in, for example, Region West. But with the help of voluntary efforts such as the Swedish Navy’s cooperation with the police, the number of boat thefts has decreased in recent years. And now the Navy wants to expand reconnaissance at night and buy drones with a thermal camera.
– We look for everything that deviates from the normal. It can be boats or cars that are in the wrong place or people who behave in a strange way, says Joakim Wohlfeil at Roslagens Sjövärnskår.
