Here rats are fought with birdhouses

Before Eurovision, Malmö invests in fighting rats. There they use ferrets that bring rats out of their passages and holes. Among other things, the ferrets Taco, Salsa and Kanel have been put to work in southern Sweden.

However, you are not alone in fighting rats with other animals.

– A barn owl takes about one rat or three mice per day and more when they have young, says street and park manager Johan Carselindto the newspaper Middle of.

So far, five birdhouses adapted for barn owls have been set up in Vallentuna. The hope is to reduce the municipality’s rat population.

Carselind also believes that more barn owls contribute to a nicer living environment.

Barn owls are not uncommon in Vallentuna. According to Carselind, the barn owl is the most common owl in the municipality.

– The barn owl is the most common owl around Vallentuna that likes large nest boxes, therefore we are trying this exciting experiment. Owls move over large areas when they are looking for places to nest and they particularly like nest boxes, Carselind tells Mitti.
