At 4 pm on Saturday, marshals began to be lit on Mälaren’s ice in Västerås. On the ice, a hundred meter heart was created with the burning flames. Marshals also ran along the quayside all the way from Framnäs to Lillåudden.
According to the organizer, the non-profit group Västerås for Ukraine, over a thousand marshals would be lit as a demonstration for peace in Europe.
Over a hundred people had registered in a Facebook event that they would participate in the demonstration.
One of them was Polina Ivanova, 28, who in March 2022 moved from Kiev to her then-boyfriend in Västerås.
– It’s a very difficult time for us, so I’m here to look at the lights and send my thoughts to those back home in Ukraine, she says.
