The Colorado Avalanche are ready for the Stanley Cup final.
Then Gabriel Landeskog did what was forbidden.
– I mean… Who cares ?, he says afterwards.
The Colorado Avalanche is ready for its first Stanley Cup final in 21 years. Many had envisioned an even conference final series against the Edmonton Oilers – led by Connor McDavid – but it was never very exciting.
Did the forbidden
The night’s victory for Avalanche, however, was far from over, as extra time was required to separate the teams. But it was a total of 4-0 in games, and Avalanche will now face either the New York Rangers or the Tampa Bay Lightning in the final, and for the Avalanche players it was a great moment.
Gabriel Landeskog has belonged to the team throughout his NHL career, but they have never gone this far, and of course there were some happy faces afterwards. But it is also an unwritten rule in the NHL that you do not celebrate the title of conference champion, despite the fact that, as usual, a big trophy came out on the ice. Usually, the players – many superstitious – do not even want to touch the dent, and this led to strange pictures last night.
“Who cares…?”
Landeskog is the team captain for Avalanche and will be the one to lift the dent. But how do you do that without even touching it? The Avalanche players could smell victory in the air. They then turned to the former major player Joe Sakic, who now works within the organization, for advice.
– We have not been here before, and some wanted to touch it, and some did not. Joe Sakic just said, “Do as you please!” Who really cares? It is not the one we invested in, we are ready to start again and start the job towards the next, says Landeskog, who burst out in a big laugh when he got questions about it all, to Sportsnet.
Landeskog, who himself scored three points in the night’s fourth win against Edmonton, was otherwise happy and proud of his team, while he immediately looked ahead.
– It’s special. It has taken a long time for us to get here, and we have been through many tough times. It is a big step in the right direction. Now it’s just rest and get ready for the final.
