Here Jews and Muslims live side by side: “Like brothers and sisters”

In principle, all the world’s religions are represented in the multi-million city of Calcutta in eastern India. Here Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Christians and many more live side by side.

Only Muslims work in one of the city’s three synagogues. On the benches hang pictures of those taken hostage by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Despite the fact that the war in the Middle East comes close to the inhabitants of Calcutta, the same contradictions between the religions are not visible as in the rest of the world.

– My mosque is God’s house, this synagogue is also God’s house. We have one god and it is the same, says Anwar Khan, who is a janitor at the synagogue and a Muslim.
