Here is the work to do in the garden in

December is far from being a time of inaction in the garden. The work you do now, even in the cold, sets the stage for a bright spring.

In December, the garden seems asleep in the winter cold, but in reality it is a crucial time to prepare for the arrival of spring. Between plant protection, equipment maintenance and first plantings, here are the essential jobs to carry out this month for a garden that shines when the weather is nice.

Frost-sensitive plants need extra care and attention in winter if they are to survive the cold. It is therefore essential to protect them. Mulch the soil around perennial plants, shrubs and rose bushes. This organic cover (dead leaves, straw, bark, etc.) limits temperature variations and keeps the roots warm. Use a winter veil to wrap the most delicate plants, such as citrus or oleander. This will prevent frost burns. Finally, bring potted plants sensitive to cold, such as geraniums, into a bright, frost-free shelter.

You also need to prepare the beds. Careful cleaning of the beds is essential to prevent diseases and promote a good recovery in spring. Remove dead leaves and plant debris that has fallen to the ground. They can harbor parasites or fungi. Prune faded perennials to about 5-10cm from the ground to encourage new growth in spring.
Lightly scratch the surface of the soil to aerate it and weed areas where weeds might take over.

If the frost has not yet completely hardened the soil, December remains a favorable period for certain plantations. Plant bare root trees and shrubs. They will have all winter to develop their roots before spring. Install spring bulbs such as tulips, daffodils or crocuses, if this has not already been done. Make sure the soil isn’t soggy to prevent them from rotting. You can also sow seeds of sweet peas or other hardy flowers that like to be planted in winter.

Even in winter, the vegetable garden requires attention to guarantee generous harvests in spring. Sow green manure like mustard or phacelia to protect the soil and enrich it with nutrients. If the ground is not frozen, you can plant shallots, garlic or onions. Also remember to carefully clean free plots to avoid the proliferation of parasites and diseases.

Finally, take advantage of the off-peak period to check and prepare your equipment. Clean and sharpen your cutting tools (pruners, shears) so that they are ready for use. Protect your metal tools from rust by lightly greasing them. Also clean your mower so that it does not rust during the winter. Now is also the time to protect your garden hose to prevent it from splitting or cracking in negative temperatures.
