The Finnish men’s national ice hockey team for the upcoming NHL four-nation tournament has been announced. Finland and Sweden simultaneously announced their teams for the NHL tournament to be played in Boston and Montreal in February.
The head coach Antti Pennanen six players had already been named to pilot Leijon before Wednesday: Juuse Saros, Miro Heiskanen, Esa Lindell, Mikko Rantanen, Sebastian Aho and Alexander Barkov.
Just returned to the NHL arena Patrick Laine was named to the team on Wednesday night.
The entire teams for the United States and Canada will be announced on Thursday at around 1:30 a.m. Finnish time.
The Finnish team is explained in more detail in Areena in the new episode of the Ikan änäri podcast, which will be published on Thursday morning at 06:00.
Goalkeepers:
Juuse Saros (Nashville Predators)
Kevin Lankinen (Vancouver Canucks)
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (Buffalo Sabres)
Defenders:
Miro Heiskanen (Dallas Stars)
Esa Lindell (Dallas Stars)
Niko Mikkola (Florida Panthers)
Olli Määttä (Utah Hockey Club)
Jani Hakanpää (Toronto Maple Leafs)
Juuso Välimäki (Utah Hockey Club)
Rasmus Ristolainen (Philadelphia Flyers)

There was a surprise in the selections of the defenders, when Henri Jokiharjun instead, the team is involved Juuso Välimäki. For example, the attackers could not be included Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Jesse Puljujärvi and Matias Maccelli.
– Overall, we have a lot of different skills, good goalkeepers and the attacking department is certainly our biggest strength. It’s true that we don’t have many NHL defensemen, but I feel that we have a strong defense that is used to playing against top forwards. The defense is big, they are good at fighting and defending, the head coach of the A national team Antti Pennanen commented in the announcement.
Only a few Finnish players in the team have been able to play in an international tournament in one national team shirt in recent years. The NHL has not participated in the Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, and the World Cup itself has not been played since autumn 2016.
– This is a huge thing for the players, that they get to represent Finland and play against the best players from other countries. I know everyone is ready to give it their all for the team, General Manager Jere Lehtinen describes.
The NHL also announced that in addition to organizing the four-nation tournament, the players of the series will participate in the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in the spring of 2026.
