With the advancement to the semi-finals of the World Cup, the Swedish women’s national team has earned a whopping 1,895,000 kroner in bonuses, per person.
After the sloppy loss against Spain in the semi-finals, a bronze medal match now awaits, against either England or Australia. And it’s not just the dream of gold that was lost with the loss. You also lose a lot of money.

Missing out on millions
If Sweden loses the bronze medal match on Saturday, they will not receive an extra bonus as the earned amount of 1,895,000 remains. Should they instead win and take the bronze medal, the bonus for each player will be SEK 1,960,000.
If, on the other hand, they had beaten Spain and progressed to the final, it would have meant an even bigger bang in the coffers. In the event of a World Cup silver, Sweden would have earned 2,120,000 kroner per player, or in the event of a gold a whopping 2,940,000 kroner. This means that each player misses out on just over a million kroner if they finish in fourth place compared to what they would have earned if they had won WC gold.
