Here is one of Stockholm’s most rain-sensitive areas

Since the 1970s, the annual rainfall in the country has increased in a clear way, according to SMHI’s climate indicator. In a warmer climate, floods are also expected to increase. This is due, among other things, to the fact that warm air can contain more water vapor and thus it can rain more.

In cities, this can cause problems, among other things because of all the asphalt and concrete that cannot absorb the water effectively. The city of Stockholm has developed a model which shows which places are most exposed to flood risks.

One of these areas is on Enskedefältet around Vårflodsparken, where meter-deep lakes can form during torrential rains.

Centennial rain

Two years ago, hundreds of villas were flooded around the park, after a so-called hundred-year rain. Stockholm water and waste, Svoa, has established that some stormwater pipes in the area lack capacity, which partly created the floods.

Now water pipes in the area are to be replaced, which P4 Stockholm previously reported on.
