Although white curtains are often a safe bet in interior decoration, be careful not to make this misstep!
When it comes to developing a living room, the choice of curtains plays a crucial role in the atmosphere and harmony of the room. This is the final touch that can make all the difference. But the curtain is not only a decorative asset, it can also have great use. If the light is essential in a house, a constant exposure can also become a nuisance. Installing curtains becomes a necessity to neutralize the light, but also the heat in the summer.
In addition to softening the entrance to natural light, the curtains elegantly dress our windows and serve as allies to maintain intimacy in the house. But be careful to choose your curtains, because not all are suitable for all spaces. It is necessary to take into account many parameters, such as color, thickness, opacity, type of fabric, length, size of the room … If white is often privileged for its luminous and timeless appearance, Raquel Chamorro, Spanish interior designer for more than 25 years, warns against certain situations where white curtains may not be the best choice.

For the interior architect, an error is often made, that of choosing white curtains by default because it goes with everything. “The only optimal occasion for white is when the wall and decoration are modern and in the same tone,” explains Raquel Chamorro. If the walls are not white, we avoid white curtains.
For the specialist, the choice of colored curtains is preferable in many cases. For example, putting white curtains “if the walls are painted in a color” is an error according to the interior architect because “white does not dress and does not develop space”. The essential point is to choose colors that “correspond or coordinate with the tone of the wall” according to the specialist.
Raquel Chamorro also shares at the Spanish site Interior errors to avoid when installing curtains in the living room:
- “When I visit a house, the most common error is that the curtains are not proportional to the size of the window and the height of the living room. They are often short or narrow, which gives a feeling of negligence and visually reduces space.”
- “Placing them too low is a common error”. The interior designer advises “placing them as close as possible to the ceiling”.
- You should also be careful not to choose “inappropriate and very heavy” curtains, they can overload the environment.
