Victims, society – and perpetrators – are hit hard during sexual abuse, according to Gört Öberg. Nevertheless, there are few clinics in Sweden that treat people with sexual problems and who risk harming others.
In the Dalarna region, for example, there is no specialized reception. Here, any patients are referred to the specialist clinic Anova where people from all over the country receive help.
However, the distance can be a threshold when it comes to seeking help for deviant sexual problems.
– There is a very great desire to be able to expand this business in the country, says Katarina Görts Öberg.
She says that Umeå, Gothenburg and Karlskrona offer care, but that they do not have the same resources, and are not as niche as Anova at Karolinska University Hospital.
Is it possible to cure a sex offender?
– It goes if you want to. With the methods and forms of treatment we have, it is possible to learn how to control their behavior, says Görts Öberg.
Simply put, there are two types of treatment – medical treatment and psychotherapeutic treatment. Often they are both combined.
– In order for the treatment methods we have to operate, it is necessary to be motivated and want to change.
KBT in combination with antidepressants
At Anova, several research studies are underway – right now you are looking at how well KBT in combination with antidepressants works to get men with sexual attraction to children to get away from their harmful behavior.
In severe cases, among other things, antitestosterone treatment, so -called chemical castration, is used.
