It is becoming increasingly popular to get a dog in Sweden. In 2021, over 78,000 dogs were registered, which is the highest figure in over 50 years, according to statistics from The Swedish Agency for Agriculture.
If you live in a rental property, you are normally allowed to have a dog, and do not need to ask the landlord for permission. There are houses where certain breeds have been banned, but according to Hem&Hyra, it is not certain that this would hold up in a legal trial.
Here you can read about the housing company that banned fighting dogs: “Dangerous animals”.
“Barking Dogs”
According to Ronny Carlssonformer area manager at Nynäshamnsbostäder, are dogs that run loose or that make noise, what neighbors usually complain about.
– Dogs that bark or whine are a problem. Often the dog owner doesn’t know about it and it can take time before neighbors speak up. Then we have to ask the owner to work on it or leave the dog in daycare, he says Home&Rent.
Here are the rules for having a dog in an apartment
You must not disturb your neighbors, and that includes your dog. The dog must not bark or howl after ten or eleven in the evening, then you may risk dismissal.
If the dog causes damage, it is the owner’s responsibility, even if it is an accident.
If the dog has worn the apartment, for example scratched the door, the owner may be obliged to pay for the damage when moving.
In residential areas, the owner must pick up poo and keep the dog on a leash.
