Many destinations are struggling with overcrowded streets, more expensive housing and a loaded infrastructure. According to the travel guide FODOR’S TRAVELS Tourists contribute to the change of cities and is more adapted to visitors than those who actually live there. In some places, people have even started protesting. Now Fodor’s Travel has released its annual list on destinations that should be avoided.

Swedes’ favorite destinations are hard hit
Several of the Swedes’ favorite destinations are included in the list of places that should be avoided as a tourist in 2025. Spain is particularly hit, where Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands are identified as problem areas.
Other popular European destinations such as Venice, Lisbon, Sicily and Scotland are also included. Outside Europe, Oaxaca, Mexico, Mount Everest, Bali, Koh Samui in Thailand, British Virgin Islands, Kerala in India and Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan, are highlighted as places where tourism causes major problems.
In some places, dissatisfaction with tourism is so great that it has led to protests, and many governments continue to prioritize tourism’s revenues over the population’s will.

To reduce the problems, tourism must become more sustainable, according to Fodor’s Travel. For example, Venice has introduced a fee for tourists to reduce congestion, and other cities are thinking about similar solutions.
