Criticism of nursing homes that serve substandard and nutritionally poor food has been recurring in the media in recent years. Among other things reported The evening paper about the emergency food at a nursing home in Linköping back in 2019.
And it is not only in quality that care for the elderly can sometimes fail – but also in quantity. According to a 2022 report from The Swedish Food Agency four out of ten municipalities in Sweden did not serve enough food to the elderly with care.
But in the darkness there are always glimmers of light, with some nursing homes standing out for their outstanding food service. News24 have now taken part in the answer to the question of which nursing home actually has the best food.

It is probably most people’s dream to, in their old age, be able to live a life of luxury. Nyheter24 has previously written about a retirement home with both a spa and a pub, which was created to offer accommodation for the best time in life.

But to determine which region, municipality or individual resident is the best in terms of food, there are special competitions that can help crown a winner.
Each year the food guide appoints Sweden’s Public Meals (SOM) several winners for the best public meals – that is, catering in schools, pre-schools and aged care.
Preschool kitchens, school kitchens and senior kitchens are assessed and categorized according to a scale of 1, 2 or 3 stars, says SOM. The assessment areas are whether the meals are considered complete or not, as well as durability of raw materials.

The prize for “Senior meal of the year 2023” went to the elderly home Björkliden in Vislanda, after the jury from SOM had made an unannounced visit to Björkliden and were floored, writes Eleventh municipality on its website.
The justification for the award was as follows:
“Cooking for our oldest citizens is a complex task that requires knowledge. Getting the food to be eaten requires love and empathy. This year’s winner possesses all these sides.”

The award for Senior Chef of the Year was also awarded, and then went to Ann-Margreth Lindénwho works at Bokens kök in Mjölby.
“The Senior Chef of the Year 2023 likes local ingredients and stands on a solid foundation in Swedish home cooking. The personal twist is also there – but never gets out of hand. A quietly twinkling star.”, writes SOM.
Which accommodation won the competition in 2024?
At the time of writing, the competition for 2024 has not yet concluded, but nominees for the Senior Chef category are Adam Brolund from the Ekilla kitchen in Sigtuna, Håkan Anderson from MatOmsorg Borgvall in Helsingborg, and Samniang Duangkasem from Tubberöds & Lilldal’s restaurant in Tjörn.
