    Yesterday Le Figaro published its list of the best maternity hospitals in the Paris region. A classification always awaited by future parents, which allows them to ask the right questions.

    Which maternity ward should I choose to give birth? This question is asked by all pregnant women. In addition to word of mouth, a few charts sometimes allow us to see things a little more clearly. This is the case with Le Figaro which yesterday published its list of maternity hospitals in Paris and Ile de France.

    What are the criteria studied by this list?

    For this 2024 list, Le Figaro wanted to be completely transparent about the criteria observed in 57 establishments which responded favorably to their request. (The others expressly refused to answer, indicates the daily).

    The media announces that it has used data from the latest HospiDiag file, compiled for the year 2022 by the Technical Agency for Hospitalization Information (ATIH) from which it extracted the indicators:

    • Number of deliveries per gynecologist and midwife (the higher it is, the more trained the gynecologist or midwife is);
    • Number of midwives per gynecologist (the higher the number, the more gynecologists are assisted);
    • Rate of cesarean sections and episiotomies (with bonus or penalty if the rate was much lower or higher than average).

    The number of specialized consultations, listening, and satisfaction of parturients (women who have given birth) were also determining factors.

    What is maternity number 1?

    This year, first place in the ranking goes to Bluets maternity ward – Pierre Rouquès hospitalcrowned in 2022 and third place in 2023. The Parisian establishment opened in 1947, rue des Bluets, then stood out for its conception of childbirth, “the famous method ofpainless childbirthpopularized” the document states. The establishment, dedicated today to gynecology, obstetrics and women’s health, maintains the same approach to childbirth that has made its reputation: physiological childbirth and listening to the woman with great E. In addition, the maternity ward actually displays a cesarean section rate well below average, and an episiotomy rate within the average. Labor and birth in water are offered. Its immediate proximity to the Trousseau hospital also allows it to win points in the event of a risky pregnancy.

    Other establishments in Ile-de-France that stand out

    Of course, out of 57 establishments, others manage to stand out. According to the ranking, there are several that offer good support to pregnant women. Three Parisian establishments stand out:

    • The Port-Royal maternity hospital;
    • The Deaconesses’ maternity ward;
    • Notre-Dame de BonSecours maternity ward.

    “All of them have average – or even below – average cesarean and episiotomy rates and a significant number of consultations and specialized workshops.”

    Outside Paris:

    • The René Dubos hospital in Pontoise;
    • The Kremlin-Bicêtre hospital;
    • The Simone Veil hospital in Eaubonne;
    • Argenteuil hospital.

    Climb into the top 10, completed by the Marne-la-Vallée private hospital and the Versailles hospital center.

    This ranking also allows us to look at the criteria that should guide a choice of maternity. Thus, Soizic Guérin-Cauet, co-president of the Inter-associative Collective around birth (Ciane) recommends in the document to pay close attention to the medical indicators highlighted in this ranking, but above all not to hesitate to ask questions directly to establishments.

    “If they don’t respond or kick in, it may be a sign of a lack of listening and consideration [des choix de la femme enceinte]”

    According to her, the quest for “good” motherhood should begin by defining your birth plan, at least in broad terms, and by being wary of word of mouth: “Good motherhood must meet our needs, not those of the colleague or neighbor.”. Please note, in the event of a high-risk pregnancy, you will probably have to give birth in a level II or III maternity ward depending on the recommendations of the obstetric team following you. These establishments will thus be able to care for your baby in the event of premature birth as well as pregnant women with pregnancy pathology.

    You have been warned.
