During the last five years, parking fees in Sweden have risen significantly, which has caused many car owners to feel the cost extra in their wallets.

A new survey from Home and Rent shows that charges for various types of parking spaces have increased significantly since 2019, reflecting a broader trend of rising living costs in the country.

Big increases for patios

The most significant increase has occurred for the public utilities’ cheapest parking spaces without electricity, where fees have risen by as much as 40 percent since 2019.

But parking spaces with electricity have also become more expensive. The cheapest places with electricity have increased by an average of 31 percent, while the most expensive have increased by 27 percent.

According to the survey, garage spaces have not had similar percentage increases. But that doesn’t mean these are a cheap option. Cold garages have seen an increase of 21 percent, while warm garages have had an increase of 22 percent, for the most expensive.

Large regional differences

The survey shows that there are large regional differences in how parking fees have developed. In some parts of the country, fees have remained relatively low and have not increased significantly in recent years.

In the metropolitan regions, where the demand for parking spaces is high, the fees have in some cases been doubled or even multiplied. This means that even a small percentage increase can mean a significant increase in actual kronor.

Martin Hofverbergchief economist at the Tenants’ Association, explains that the rampant parking fees are caused by the fact that there are no negotiations about them.

– Once upon a time, parking fees were included in the negotiation arrangements and then we negotiated them together with everything else. Now we have released that part and then market pricing will largely prevail. There are pros and cons to that. The disadvantage is, of course, that it can be a completely different type of increase when there is no collective bargaining system around it. It is of course regrettable.

He adds:

– On the other hand, those who do not have a car avoid having to finance those who have a car. Because that is what happens if there is a collective negotiation regarding the parking fees.
