The list of products payable in meal vouchers at the supermarket changes from January 1st. Here is what is now eligible for this payment method.
This was one of the bad news of the end of the year: meal vouchers will no longer be usable as desired from the 1er January 2025. An announcement that came as a blow to the 4.5 million French people who benefit from this system. This was provided for in the law but the deputies and senators had planned to extend the rules currently in force.
However, with censorship, their work was interrupted and the extension of the current provisions could not be implemented in time. Thus, the transition to the new year will mark a restriction in the list of products payable in meal vouchers at the supermarket.
It’s a return a little more than two years ago that is coming. In fact, it is the rules that were in force before October 2022 which will apply again. Here are the only products that you will be able to pay for using meal vouchers in supermarkets from 1er January :
- fruits and vegetables, whether or not they are directly consumable
- fresh or frozen prepared meals
- fresh processed fish (surimis, spring rolls, nuggets, brandade, accra, rillettes, etc.)
- bakery products (bread, etc.)
- dairy products
- catering products
- mixed salads,
- snacking,
- soups
- savory tarts/quiches/pizzas
Added to this list is any purchase in a bakery and, obviously, any payment in a restaurant.
All products which are not directly consumable are therefore excluded. These include meat, fish and fresh seafood, eggs, oil, butter, sugar, etc.
However, it is a safe bet that this situation will only be transitory. Indeed, a law, adopted by the National Assembly, had to be voted on by the Senate. It plans to extend the use of restaurant vouchers for all products until 2026. However, senators were unable to vote on it due to censorship. As the government was overthrown, this suspended the work of parliamentarians. As long as no government is appointed, work cannot resume.
As soon as a government is in place, the vote can take place. Purchasing any product in a supermarket will be like this – a priori – possible again with the restaurant ticket card. Perhaps the distributors (Leclerc, Carrefour, Lidl, Auchan, etc.) will not even change their payment system for just a few days…
