Ludvig Åberg is chasing a win in the PGA Tour playoffs.
Now Henrik Stenson says exactly what everyone wants to hear about the Swedish sensation’s chances – in the competition where a billion(!) kroner is awarded.
– It is absolutely not impossible, says Stenson.
Ludvig Åberg’s first season as a golf professional is soon over, and it cannot be summed up in any other way than an almost sensational success. It was only last summer that Åberg left college in the USA, and since then he has had time to play both the Ryder Cup and make his debut in all four majors.
Stenson’s glorious verdict
Åberg quickly became a favorite in the golf world with his coolness and his ability to always get around the golf courses with a smile on his face, and in his first career US Masters, he finished second to the superior world number one Scottie Scheffler. It is a huge achievement that Åberg made it all the way to the finals of the PGA tour’s playoffs, what goes by the name of the FedEx Cup, and now, starting today Thursday, the grand finale begins at East Lake in Atlanta.
The PGA Tour playoffs are made in such a way that whoever leads the tour starts with a lead, and Åberg, who is fifth overall, therefore starts the competition at five under par – five strokes behind Scottie Scheffler, who has won a total of six PGA Tour events in year. But despite the distance, Henrik Stenson, Sweden’s leading golfer on the men’s side of all time, believes that Åberg has good opportunities to play.
– You just have to go out and drive for Ludde. He is five strokes behind, that’s four laps and just over one stroke per lap. It is absolutely not impossible if you play well, he tells Radiosporten.
Playing for a billion (!) kroner
Henrik Stenson is the only Swede to win the PGA Tour playoffs, a feat he achieved in 2013 after a raucous duel with, among others, Tiger Woods.
– The best five-six month period in my career. I played incredibly good golf and one of the great achievements was going out on Thursday afternoon with Tiger. He had the lead, and I was second, but I beat him pretty good on Thursday and got a good start to the week, and put myself in position to win the final,” said Stenson.
And it’s not just any contest for the stars when the PGA Tour is decided. A total of one billion (!) kroner will be awarded in prize money, and the winner will cash in round 255 million kroner. In addition, free play is given on the PGA Tour for the next five years.
– It’s always nice to have a backup in case you need it. But Ludde has had a fantastic season of course, entering as one of the absolute highest ranked players. It is a receipt for the fine season he has had, then of course it would be a big feather in his cap if he were to take home the final, against that starting field, says Stenson.
