Hemingway’s letters about the plane crashes sold dearly

On January 23, 1954, Hemingway and his wife Mary were on a safari trip in Uganda when the plane they were on was forced to make an emergency landing in the jungle.

The couple had to spend the night in the wilderness and several media outlets reported that Hemingway was dead. They managed to get out of the jungle with the help of a tourist boat that picked them up.

The next day they found themselves on another plane that caught fire during takeoff. The plane exploded and crashed, seriously injuring both Ernest and Mary.

In the letter sent to Hemingway’s lawyer, it can be read that he is weak after severe internal bleeding and that he has “been a good boy and tried to rest”.

The four-page letter was sold at a sale in Los Angeles.
