For judges, the debt officer can take away some of the feeling of powerlessness. “Judges know that the judgment they make sometimes worsens people’s problems,” says press judge Pauline Elferink. “Yet they have no choice, because if someone does not pay, then the creditor is legally within his or her rights.”
