Hell Hordes – Everything about quests, compasses and loot in the new endgame activity

In the new endgame activity “Infernal Hordes” in Diablo 4, you fight against waves of enemies. In doing so, you collect Burning Aether to receive rewards. You can find out how the mode works and what you need for it here on MeinMMO.

What is this new mode? With Season 5, a new endgame activity is coming to Diablo 4: the “Infernal Hordes”. The activity is an essential part of the “Season of Infernal Hordes” and is available at World Levels 3 and 4.

The activity is based on monster waves and you can start it alone or with your friends on the Eternal and Seasonal realms. To start the activity, however, you must first complete a quest and have a compass. Below you will find out how it all works.

Hell Hordes: How to start the endgame activity

How do I start the Hell Hordes? To start the Hell Hordes, you have to complete several points:

  • Complete the Of Lambs and Wolves questline on World Tier 1 or 2.
  • Unlocks World Tier 3.
  • Complete the “Eyes of the Enemy” quest line.
  • You unlock the Hell Hordes.
  • The quest line will remain available on Eternal and Seasonal realms even after Season 5 ends. You only need to complete it once on your account – unless you switch to Hardcore.

To open the Hell Horde activity, you need a Hell Compass. These compasses, which act as a key to the activity, range from level 1 to 8. The level represents the difficulty and level of the monsters. In addition, the levels improve the rewards and reduce your respawns.

    How to get Hell Compasses:

  • from chests in the Helltide
  • of damners in the flood of hell
  • from whisper chests from the tree (75% chance)
  • from Nightmare Dungeons
  • from the pit
  • you craft them at the Occultist from Seals of Power and Forgotten Souls
  • With Abyssal Scrolls that you find in Sanctuary, you can upgrade your Hell Compass
  • Hell Hordes: How the activity works

How do the Hell Hordes work? In the Hell Hordes, you fight against waves of monsters that last 60 seconds. In doing so, you collect Burning Aether, regardless of whether you are playing alone or in a group. Your animal companion collects the “currency” for you.

If your character dies, you don’t lose any ether, but respawns are limited. Between waves, you select a “Hellish Gift” and decide between “Blessing and Curse”. This gives you the option of increasing the strength of the monsters and the rewards.

If you manage to survive the hordes of hell, various chests with rewards await you, from which you can choose:

  • legendary items and uniques
  • Mats or Gold
  • opening “costs” 20 ether
  • with 60 Aether you unlock a large chest that is guaranteed to contain an item with a Large Affix
  • An offer from hell to make the run even harder.

Hell Hordes: Boss fight against the “Cruel Council”

Finally, you fight against the “Cruel Council.” There are 5 members in total and every time you face the council in the Hell Hordes, 3 different members are randomly selected. If you defeat the council, you will also receive Burning Aether, which you collect for the rewards. The amount depends on the world level.

Who are the bosses? The “Cruel Council” consists of council members from Diablo 2 who were revived by Mephisto. There, they were a special type of monster with their own bonuses. They used to be warriors and members of the “High Council of Zakarum” who were supposed to guard Mephisto, but were corrupted by him and turned into demons.

In Diablo 2 there were 7 of these members (via fandom).

  • Ismail Vilehand (Cursed)
  • Geleb Flamefinger (Fire Enchanted)
  • Toorc Icefist (Cold Enchanted)
  • Wyand Voidbringer (Teleportation)
  • Maffer Dragonhand (Extra Strong)
  • Bremm Sparkfist (Lightning Enchanted)
  • Bartuc the Bloody
  • The Hell Hordes are the new endgame activity on world levels 3 and 4 and have been available in Diablo 4 since Season 5. But you can also get an impression of the events on world levels 1 and 2: The new “Hell Breach Dungeons” are basically a smaller version of the Hell Hordes. There you farm XP, reputation and loot. The developers explained that they were inspired by a popular dungeon from Diablo 4: Season 5 brings new dungeons in Diablo 4 in which you farm reputation and XP, reminiscent of “dopamine tunnels”
