Hélène’s mother Leida also fled to France, together with her great love Salo. She outlived her new husband; his life ended in extermination camp Sobibor. A great shock for Leida, as can be read in the book: “Long lists hang in the office with the victims who were murdered in the various concentration camps. When reading every name of a slain family member, Leida has less and less hope that her most loved ones are still alive. Yet the shock is enormous when she sees the names of her parents, brother and Salo in black and white. The ground seems to be sinking under her. She can barely prevent herself from falling into the existing building staircase falls.”
