She has done six seasons in Vinterstudion.
But now the popular biathlon expert Helena Ekholm is giving thanks.
– It feels sad, she says.
Helena Ekholm is one of Swedish biathlon’s true greats. During his active career, there were two individual WC golds and three WC bronzes, and there were also three more medals in relays. During the 2008/2009 season, she also managed the feat of winning the overall World Cup.
Therefore she leaves
For her successes that winter, she was rewarded with fine prizes such as the Jerring prize and Svenska Dagbladet’s gold medal, and the following year she was also named sportswoman of the year. Just a year later, she chose to end her career, but in 2014 she appeared in the box again, then as an expert for Viasat during their Olympic broadcasts.
Since 2018, Ekholm has been an expert commentator for SVT, and had an obvious place in the incredibly popular Vinterstudion broadcasts. But there won’t be any more broadcasts. SVT announced on Thursday that Ekholm is quitting her TV job, as she has received a “civilian service”.
– I have done six seasons in the Winter Studio with fantastic colleagues and where I have been able to follow the sport that is dearest to my heart, says Ekholm.
“Remember all the unexpected achievements”
Ekholm describes the whole thing as “sad and boring”‚ and highlights, among other things, the WC at home in Östersund and the WC in Oberhof as the main memories.
– I remember all the breakthroughs and unexpected achievements that the Swedish team was responsible for and to name a few, for example Anna Magnusson’s World Cup victory and Viktor Brandt’s starting distance at the WC this winter stand out a little extra, she says.
At the same time, SVT announces that it has started a process to find a new expert as a replacement, who will work together with, among others, Björn Ferry.
– She has contributed to Vinterstudion continuing to have such a strong position with the audience. We wish her the best of luck. Now we are looking at replacements for Helena who can complement Björn Ferry, says Marcus Törngren, events director at SVT.
