Spain celebrated a historic World Cup gold.
Then something happened that was not allowed to happen during the golden celebration.

The hot WC final on Sunday made sports history on the women’s side. For the first time ever, Spain managed to win the World Cup gold after defeating England 1-0.

But the aftermath would be about something else entirely. Because in the midst of the Spanish gold celebrations, the unthinkable happened.

During the medal ceremony, Spain’s confederation president acted Luis Rubiales highly inappropriate against the Spanish golden heroes. Where he hugged and kissed several players on the mouth and also reportedly patted some of the players on the butt.

Lindahl’s criticism
The scenes have sparked huge reactions throughout the football world, with many condemning Rubiale’s inappropriate actions. Swedish goalkeeper hero Hedvig Lindahl is one of many who are furious.
“This is deeply worrying. After a month of tributes to women, respect for women and the joy of women’s sport, this is what’s on display when it’s over. This behavior is far from our values. It’s not okay,” she writes on X (formerly Twitter).
“I wonder what the brand partners of the Spanish Football Federation think about this situation? The same applies to the partners of the football World Cup, to be honest”.

Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso was one of those who were exposed to Rubiale’s well-known actions and afterwards she said that it was “not nice at all”. Last night, the union chairman himself went out and hit back against all accusations about his conduct.
– The kiss with “Jenni”? There are idiots everywhere. When two people have a moment of affection without meaning, we can’t listen to idiocy. We are champions and I stick to that, he told Spanish Radio Marca.

“A proud idiot”
The Spaniard’s words make Lindahl react even more critically.
“Rubiales thinks that anyone who thinks it’s wrong to kiss someone on the mouth without consent is an IDIOTS. I know what I am. What are you?”, she writes on X along with the hashtag “proud idiot”.
Hedvig Lindahl, who was very outspoken and clear in her opinions during the World Cup, now wants to see change so that something like this does not happen again in women’s football.
“Would it be possible to have a person responsible for personal security, who is NOT connected to the federation, at every camp that the national teams have?”, she writes in a post.
