One of the year’s most important events in Chinese politics, the Third Plenum, begins on Monday. Ahead of the hotly anticipated meeting, President Xi Jinping has announced extensive reforms.
Economic recovery is expected to be high on the agenda during the four-day meeting with Central Committee members in Beijing. Recently, President Xi Jinping announced that policy makers are planning and implementing comprehensive measures. At the same time, he promised a “more market-oriented” business environment.
China has struggled since the pandemic to revive economic growth, and what is said at the four-day meeting is likely to guide policy-making for years to come.
– There are hopes that this third plenum will bring new breakthroughs in politics, says Andrew Batson at the consulting company Gavekal Dragonomic to the AFP news agency.
The ruling Communist Party of China holds its party congress every five years. There, among other things, the central committee is appointed, which usually meets in seven plenums during each five-year period. At the third plenum, policies that can change the direction of the country’s economy are often announced.
