A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a heavy fire raged in an apartment in central Gothenburg.

The emergency services were called to the apartment just after seven o’clock on Wednesday morning. Although it burned heavily, the fire was extinguished relatively quickly. The emergency services are now at the scene for follow-up work.

– There has been a heavy fire in an apartment on the first floor. We are still at the scene with seven vehicles, two of which are command vehicles, says Niclas Fogelqvist at the rescue service at eight o’clock in the morning.

A man who was in the apartment in question must have jumped out of the window, the police say. The man is now arrested on suspicion of arson and drug offences, as he was under the influence of drugs when he was arrested.

– He is suspected of having started this fire himself, says Thomas Fuxborg, press spokesperson at the police.

The farm and the property have been cordoned off and a technical examination will be carried out by the police as soon as the emergency services are ready at the scene. No other residents have had to be evacuated due to the fire, according to the police.
