Heavy fire in a smelter in Skelleftehamn – the public is warned

The alarm came in at 2:25 a.m. and an Important Public Notice (VMA) has been issued warning of toxic smoke and asking the public to go indoors and close doors, windows and ventilation.

– This could probably develop into a serious fire, says David Levy, officer on duty at police region North.

No one should be injured according to early information.

– It must burn with open flames and the rescue service has several resources that are on their way. There is probably no risk of it spreading to buildings considering that it is in the harbor out in the water, but there is heavy smoke development, says David Levy.

Rönnskärsverken in Skelleftehamn is located in Skellefteå municipality and is Sweden’s only smelter for the production of base metals, and works with the recycling of electronic scrap.
