London Airport Heathrow resumes air traffic later in the evening, the airport’s management announces.
Traffic will be reduced during Friday but is expected to be running as usual on Saturday.
“We can now resume flights safely and prioritize home transport and relocation of aircraft,” Heathrow writes in a Post on X..
“We hope to be in full operation tomorrow and will provide additional information soon,” the post continues.
The huge London airport was closed after a fire late Thursday evening which caused a comprehensive power outage. Hundreds of thousands of travelers have been affected.
Flights have been redirected to Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Shannon in Ireland, shows tracking services. According to Bloomberg, there are 120 aircraft that were on their way to the airport that had to be redirected or returned.
Anti -terror investigators lead the police investigation, but the police state that there are no signs of crime. The police also state that it is connected as a result of the location of the fire and its impact on critical infrastructure. The police have “specialized resources and capacity” that can help quickly find the cause of the fire.
Heathrow handles more than 1,400 flights and 200,000 travelers every day. It is one of the world’s busiest airports when it comes to international travel. In January, the airport had 6.3 million passengers.
