Heat warning issued for Brantford Brant

A heat warning has been issued for the city and residents are urged to take precautions as temperatures rise to at least 31 C.

Heat warnings are issued when Environment and Climate Change Canada expects temperatures to reach 31 C or higher over a two-day period. Other factors that contribute to heat warnings are night time temperatures of 21 C or higher and ahumidex of 40 C or higher.

In Brantford, the heat warning was issued by Dr. Rebecca Comley, Brant County’s acting medical officer of health. It remains in effect until a cancellation notice is issued.

The Brant County Health Unit says everyone, especially older adults, infants and young children, people who work or exercise, are at risk during extreme heat days. People with certain medical conditions are also at risk.

Health unit officials symptoms of heat-related illnesses including extreme thirst, increased urination, dizziness or fainting, rapid breathing, nausea or vomiting, and rapid heartbeat.

Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms during extreme heat, should immediately move to a cool place, drink water and seek medical attention.

Residents are also urged to check on friends, family and neighbours, especially the elderly and those who are chronically ill, during heat events and even after the weather cools off as they may still feel negative health impacts of the heat.
