Health unit reports 82nd COVID 19 death for Brantford Brant

The Brant County Health Unit reported Wednesday the area’s 82nd COVID-19 death.

The most recent death involved a male in his 80s who was classified as hospitalized at the time of his death and whose transmission was part of the Brantford General Hospital’s B8 outbreak.

No other details were released by the health unit.

The number of people hospitalized in the Brantford-Brant region with COVID-19 remains stable.

On Wednesday, the Brant Community Healthcare System was reporting 25 people receiving care at the area’s two local hospitals, with none of them in critical care. Those are the exact same numbers that were reported on Monday.

The number of new cases reported Wednesday over the past 48 hours was 17, although that number is likely higher due to limited testing.

There have now been 10,976 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic and of all the cases, 10,766 have been resolved.

Active cases have decreased from 133 on Monday to 128 on Wednesday.

Of the patients admitted to hospital, 155 have been unvaccinated for a rate of 876.3 per 100,000 people, while 322 have been fully vaccinated for a rate of 281.57/100,000. In ICUs, 16 people were unvaccinated for a rate of 90.46/100,000 and 34 were fully vaccinated for rate of 29.73/100,000.

As for vaccinations, there have been 346,044 total doses of the vaccine administered at vaccination clinics in Brantford-Brant. In Brantford-Brant, 84.82 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine, while 81.87 per cent have received two or more doses.

Walk-in vaccination clinics will be held this week at Lynden Park Mall (near Entrance 4) Wednesday and Friday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm A clinic will also be held at 195 Henry St. on Thursday from 9:30 am at 3:30 p.m.

  • Residence on Sheridan, Aug. 8, nine residents and two staff members;
  • Riverview Terrace, Aug. 8, 17 residents and one staff member;
  • Brucefield Manor (Mount Pleasant), Aug. 2, 15 residents;
  • Sensity (Paris), Aug. 2, two residents and two staff members;
  • Telfer Place Retirement Residence (Paris), July 26, 11 residents and three staff members;
  • Hardy Terrace LTC, July 18, 14 residents and 10 staff members;
  • Brantford General Hospital (B7 unit), Aug. 10, three patients and one staff member;
  • Brantford General Hospital (B6 unit), Aug. 4, two residents;
  • Brantford General Hospital (B8 unit), July 22, 18 residents and one staff member.

As of Tuesday, there were four active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River and five people self-isolating

One person from Six Nations is currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,676 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 51 per cent completing their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

On Aug. 11, Public Health Ontario was reporting 1,382 people in hospital, down from 1,474 a week prior.

Of those in hospital, 142 patients were in ICUs, an increase from 139 the previous week.

The average weekly positivity rate is 13.4 per cent, down from 14.5 per cent in the previous seven-day period.

There were 96 new COVID-19 deaths over the past week and there have now been 13,813 deaths.
