Health unit reports 106th COVID 19 death

The Brant County Health Unit on Tuesday reported one COVID-19 death over the past week, bringing the number of fatalities in the area to 106 since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.

The victim was a woman in her 80s, whose transmission was associated with the Brantford General Hospital B6 outbreak that closed on Dec. 6. She was classified as hospitalized at the time of death. No other details were released by the health unit.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have decreased since last week, while new cases of the virus in the area have increased slightly.

According to the Brant Community Healthcare System, as of Tuesday there are three COVID patients receiving care at Brantford General Hospital or the Willett in Paris, with no one in critical care.

Last week saw eight COVID patients in hospital, with no one in critical care.

Also on Tuesday, the health unit announced there were 50 new COVID-19 cases reported over the past week, although the number is thought to be higher due to limited testing. There were 45 cases reported last week.

There have now been 12,258 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. Of all the cases, 12,102 have been resolved.

Active cases have increased from 29 last week to 50 this week.

As for vaccinations, 85 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine, 82 per cent have received two doses, 49 per cent have received three doses and 21 per cent have received four doses.

Walk-in vaccination clinics will be held this week at the Paris fairgrounds on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:15 am to 2:45 pm. and at the civic center on Friday from 12:15 pm to 4:45 pm. and Saturday from 10:30 am to 3 pm

There are currently two local outbreaks at long-term care facilities, retirement homes and congregate living setting. Last week there were two.

These are the locations:

  • Rosewood House (42 Nelson St.), Nov. 28, 14 residents and five staff members;
  • Tranquility Place Retirement Home, Nov. 28, nine residents

As of Dec. 5, there were four active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River.

No one from Six Nations is currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,704 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 51 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations since the start of the pandemic.
