Prof. stated that madımak herb is a plant species that grows and is traditionally consumed especially in Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia in Turkey. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut said, “It is naturally found in these regions, especially in cities such as Sivas, Erzincan, Malatya, Adıyaman and Siirt.”
Providing information about the properties and names of the plant, Prof. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut said, “Madımak herb belongs to the sideritis species and is known for its characteristic thin leaves and cluster-shaped flowers. It is also popularly known as yellow herb, tea. “It is also known by names such as rye grass, sorrel, milk grass, keşememesi and bird seedlings,” he said.
Providing information about the places where knotweed grows around the world, Prof. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut said, “Madımak herb is known to grow in some Mediterranean countries outside of Turkey. However, the population of this plant in natural environments in Turkey is more prominent and widespread.”
Prof. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut mentioned that knotweed also has potential health benefits. Stating that the components in knotweed have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Karabulut said, “It may also have supporting digestive system, strengthening the immune system and stress-reducing effects.” “It is considered,” he said.
Prof. stated that Madımak herb can be consumed in various ways and is especially preferred as soup and tea. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut also emphasized that this plant has a cultural and medical importance in society.
Prof. stated that knotweed, which is a plant species containing various biological components, generally contains antioxidants, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, minerals and vitamins. Dr. Karabulut stated that it is traditionally used in the treatment of ailments such as flu and cold, and that it also supports the digestive system, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
